Those approaching Zutphen can’t help being impressed by the view of the beautiful white facade of tall houses along the river IJssel with in the background Zutphen’s five towers. This alluring skyline makes one curious to explore its historic town centre.

Our Hanseatic town has quite a lot of historic buildings like churches, towers and merchant houses. You will find many gardens, parks and courtyards (so-called’Hofjes’) that were tended by weavers, bakers and brewers in days gone by. Around the very centre you can still see parts of the old town (or city) walls, which date back to the 13th and 14th centuries. It feels like walking in the Middle Ages! So it is not surprising that Zutphen draws more than a hundred thousand visitors a year.

Many people are also attracted by Zutphen’s extensive range of quality shops, restaurants and cafés and museums and art galleries. On Thursdays and Saturdays the local markets also draw a lot of people.

Just a five-minute walk from the centre you will find our house with the river Berkel at the back. It is the perfect home base for lovers of culture, nature and art. Walkers, hikers, cyclists and canoeists have lots of opportunities to explore the town and/or its surrounding beautiful countryside.
